Hampshire FA and Grassroots Clubs Unite to Support International Kit Appeal
RAF Odiham joined forces once again with Hampshire FA to transfer the generous donations made by Hampshire grassroots clubs in support of the ‘Taking Football to Africa & Beyond’ charity appeal for the 2023-24 season. Through this collaboration, the kits made their way to RAF Shawbury, whereby former RAF Shawbury Wing Commander Neil Hope (who is also the Founder of the charity, Lotties Way), coordinated the RAF-backed operation - ‘Taking Football to Africa and Beyond’ charitable appeal.
‘Taking Football to Africa and Beyond’ has been in operation for nearly two decades and was originally organised by Neil Hope MBE. The appeal operates from RAF Shawbury based in North Shropshire, through the RAF Football Association. It aims to provide aid to impoverished areas of the world through donated kits and equipment and since its inception, has successfully delivered over 400,000 items to countries across all continents!
Various county football associations and clubs across the country have supported this campaign and continue to do so, from grassroots through to elite set-ups. Through extensive marketing efforts, we have collectively contributed to the campaign, harnessing local support for international communities. Through the power of the strong and cohesive grassroots community in Hampshire, we have been able to actively support the annual appeal since 2014, with donations increasing year on year.
Items have reached small African villages as well as the huge ‘Slum’ towns of Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria, as well as to mountain villages in the Peruvian Andes, refugee camps on the Syria/Turkey border, war torn Afghanistan and Iraq, diverse areas in Pakistan, India and across the Middle East and Southeast Asia. More recently, the appeal has also managed to deliver items to war-struck Ukraine.
The items have assisted people across all genders, faiths and beliefs emphasising the truly diverse and inclusive reach of football and its ability to unite everyone.
Neil Hope and Squadron Leader Mark Smales jointly led and coordinated the entire operation and distribution, together with a team of volunteers and staff.
A new date will be set later in the year in preparation for the next distribution. For more information, please contact Isabella: Isabella.Pearson@HampshireFA.com.
