An England Grassroots Football Award celebrates individuals for their efforts, commitment and impact on the grassroots game. It is our opportunity to celebrate the people who have put their heart and soul into football across England.

Recipients of this award for the 2022/23 season are:

Jacob Wright
Match Official of the Year

Jacob began his career in refereeing at the age of 14 and quickly progressed through the levels to coach and mentor other referees. In his refereeing career, he has been promoted to Level 3 and this has led him to officiate many National League matches and for several football league sides. Jacob has been awarded ‘Best Youth Referee in Portsmouth’ in 2012 and in 2019 achieved the ‘Best Level 4 Referee’ award. In 2017 he formed the Portsmouth Refereeing Development Group (PRDG) which helps young referees from the Portsmouth area progress in refereeing by offering them a safe place to discuss their matches and help resolve any issues they may have encountered, whilst educating them on the Laws of the Game. Through the PRDG he has worked with over 50 referees in the local area and has helped 36 referees achieve promotion.

Hampshire County Women’s Football League
League of the Year Award

The Hampshire County Women's Football League was formed in 1999 and today boasts 6 divisions, 50 teams and 1500 registered players. Many players have progressed through various divisions through to the Southern Region and National leagues. Beginners are also encouraged, assisted, and nurtured throughout. Managers as well as coaches have established rapport within the teams, creating a safe and friendly environment for all to flourish. The league has seen lasting friendships, relationships and even families created, with many women juggling their football with parental duties. Teams are encouraged to participate in various competitions and have picked up various silverware over the years as well. The female game looks promising with participation truly on the rise, and this will undoubtedly be the case in the league as it continues to be backed by a supportive and dedicated workforce.

Kellie Flexman
Female Pathway Coach of the Year Award

Kellie got involved in grassroots football in 2005 when her daughter joined Boscombe Albion FC. The team needed a coach and Kellie stepped up with no prior football experience and took both her Level 1 and 2 coaching badges. Kellie has managed girls' youth teams and additionally has taken on the roles of Secretary, Chairman and Welfare Officer across both New Milton Town Men's & Women's sections. Kellie extensively promotes girls and women's football and has set-up Weetabix Wildcats sessions at the club. She has also voluntarily coached in local schools to encourage more girls into the sport.

Connor Holloway
Disability Pathway Coach of the Year Award

Connor has been volunteering on the AFC Bournemouth Ability Counts U16 Disability Pathway for three years and has supported their Community Sports Trust (CST) coaches to deliver sessions for their Ability Counts U16 teams. He also plays himself for their CP team and Ability Counts Senior Team, training weekly and playing competitive fixtures. Connor started up by first setting up and arranging kit and cones, however, has now progressed to delivering football-based activities to young people in small groups during the team’s weekly evening sessions. Connor further supports the teams with motivational team talks and offers individual support to players that require it.

Aiden Bevan
Male Pathway Coach of the Year Award

Aiden started as a player and got back into football 8 years ago when his son joined a team. Aiden became a coach at AFC Stoneham when there were 22 boys in search of a new manager and created two new teams. This was the beginning of the club’s extensive youth development programme. Aiden has been with AFC Stoneham Wolves who compete in Division 3 and who narrowly missed out on promotion by one point. The team has grown together, through good and challenging times and pride themselves on having a supportive football family. Parents have all contributed to the set-up over the years, including Aiden’s wife who has undertaken PA duties and organised fundraising events to raise money for the club. Everything he does, he does for the team.

Hythe & Dibden Youth FC
Club of the Year Award

At Hythe & Dibden Youth FC there is one clear goal - to become one of the FA’s benchmark clubs for inclusivity in youth football. The club’s motto is 'We All Can Play’, stemming from the belief that football can be a vehicle to empower children and young people with positive skills and values and have a powerful impact on their lives. The club’s mission is to make these benefits available to all, regardless of ability. The club works hard to keep the teams in each age group connected as one squad through a ‘soft tiering’ system. This enables the club to create a range of playing environments and conditions for players to be able to enjoy the beautiful game. The club has pushed hard over the last 10 years to grow girls’ football in the area and has over 120 girls and a girls’ team in every age group, offering playing opportunities for all.

Lacey Smith
New Volunteer of the Year Award

Lacey has been involved in football for most of her childhood through to her early 20s. In November 2021 (and with a few women’s teams in the local area) Lacey and a friend established Paulsgrove Ladies, a brand-new female team and the first of its kind at the club, who went on to win the division. During the season, Lacey volunteered for the committee as a Division rep and supported several teams and events with their communications. Lacey has enjoyed watching the women’s game progress to the heights it is at now and hopes this will continue to be the case, especially locally at the Hampshire County Women’s Football League.

Tariq Al-Maskriy
Young Volunteer of the Year Award

Tariq got involved in grassroots football during his time at college when he started coaching. Whilst studying at university, he also undertook an internship with Hampshire FA and worked alongside Alienor Chartier and the football delivery team. The focus of the internship was on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) work, and throughout the past year assisted in the development of many campaigns and projects such as the Rainbow Laces campaign and the Hope tournament. Tariq now hopes to expand his knowledge in the field and continue his development.

Solent Sports FC
The Lioness Award

Solent Sports FC established a women's recreational football group three years ago based on feedback that there wasn’t anywhere for females to just play football. Founder, Steve Fletcher sought to change this, and Solent Sports FC began offering sessions. The club delivers six weekly groups supporting over 120 female players. Solent Sports have sponsored and supported a few girls’ school teams with kits and additionally, the club organised several trips to Wembley to watch the Lionesses. Last season the club sponsored two grassroots teams by offering them a facility to continue their female football provision. Next season Solent Sports FC are creating a league football team, made up of players who’ve returned to the game via the recreational pathway.

Kieran Way
Positive Football Environment Award

Kieran’s pathway into grassroots football is a similar story for many of us. From watching his son at his football sessions to then becoming the U7s (now U16s) Coach for the team. During his time at the club, he has served in various roles including as Vice-Chairman, Club Treasurer, Goalkeeper Coach, and has even officiated matches. He has upheld the same principle throughout: it is about developing as an individual and as a team; not just as a footballer, but as a person. As a coach, he has had the pleasure of helping players through footballing and personal journeys and is thankful to Southbrook Youth FC for giving him the chance to positively impact young people through the sport.

Shanklin FC
Grounds Team of the Year Award - Brian Drudge & Mick Newnham

Shanklin FC was established in 1888 with youth, men’s, and women's sides. The youth set-up has had a successful season and recently took part (and was successful) in a regional tournament. The women's side also won the Hants Division 1 in 2022 and were runners-up in the cup this year. The men's side won back-to-back IOW Division 1 trophies and were runners-up two seasons running in the Hampshire Cup. Additionally, the men’s side won the IOW Memorial Cup this year. As a voluntary-run club, the team maintains its own pitches used by its youth, women, and men's sides. IOW Prison services also use Shanklin FC’s facility for their training. The club is always willing to help other grassroots sides by offering advice and/or loaning equipment to support their set-ups.

Hampshire FA Foundation Awards
A Hampshire FA Foundation Award recognises an individual, club, league or organisation that has contributed to one of Hampshire FA Foundation’s three key pillars. Those pillars are: Disability Football, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, and/or Community Coaching throughout the 2022-23 season.

Recipients of this award for the 2022/23 season are:

Alix Taylor (Care4Calais)

Until watching the asylum seeker football team from Basingstoke play their first match, Alix confesses she has only ever watched 2 football matches - the Lionesses winning the Euros last year & England beating West Germany in 1966. However, after becoming a volunteer with Care4Calais in Dec 2021 it became evident that football was going to be one of the most important ways to reduce stress and improve the mental health of the many individuals sadly confined in hotel rooms. Alix is incredibly grateful to Hampshire FA for providing the monthly football sessions at Winklebury and for the Equality FC 5-a-side tournaments. She confirms it is a privilege to watch them and to witness their happiness on the pitch instead of the stress on their faces.

Brading Town Pan-Disability FC

Brading Town founded their ‘Invicta’ inclusive football section in 2019 after a successful school session pilot. The club now has young people training with them from U8s through to U21s. Brading takes both male and female players each month from the Isle of Wight to play in the Eastleigh Pan-Disability League.

The FA Long Service to Football Award

The FA Long Service to Football Award is a highly prestigious award made to those who have given an astonishing 50 years of service to football.

Recipients of this award for the 2022/23 season are:

Chas Morrison

Chas qualified as a referee in London in 1970 and moved through the refereeing levels whilst living in Surrey (then in five other counties) before moving to Hampshire in 1988. Chas officiated in local and professional football, moving back into local football in 1990 because of the FA age restrictions at that time. He became a Training Officer for referees in 1993, the County Training Officer 5 years later, and then the Area Advisor (Referees) for Hampshire and Dorset. He continues to train new and current referees to this day. He has been an Assessor / Referee Observer since 1995. In the last two seasons, Chas helped to deliver 20 courses for new referees, plus workshops for promotion candidates, and in season 2022/23 completed Referee Observer duties at 65 matches in Steps 3 to 6 football.

Bill Moore

Bill has been involved in football since 1970 as a player, coach, manager, and club chairman and currently serves as a member of the Hampshire FA Male Pathway Panel and Wessex League Management Board. Bill thoroughly enjoys being involved in football and will continue to stay involved for as long as possible, wishing to contribute all that he can to the game that he loves. He considers this a wonderful stage to have reached in his journey, where he feels he can truly give something back to football by being involved in the organisation and administration side of it. Seeing others achieve the same levels of enjoyment and satisfaction that he has had over the years fills him with confidence for the future of the game.
