Portsmouth Ladies book their place in the quarter-finals of the Women's Premier League Cup
The Blues won 2-1 with a dominant performance in front of 150 supporters at Westleigh Park.
Pompey raced out of the blocks, quickly imposing themselves on their visitors and pressing the City defence.
The first real chance of the match came on 21 minutes when a good ball in from Shelly Cox found Gemma Hillier, but with only keeper Andrea Worrall to beat she fired her effort wide.
Moments later Charley Wilson had a chance to take the lead, however her shot skimmed over the bar.
Then – on 23 minutes – Kayleigh Schumann-Edwards found Lindsey Roe in the box. The City keeper was able to get to her ensuing effort, but parried the ball out to COX who netted an impressive goal from an acute angle.
It was soon two when Wilson turned her marker and rolled the ball in to HILLIER. This time the captain didn’t miss and doubled the Blues advantage.
City came close to pulling a goal back but Sadie Blakely made a brilliant – and crucial – save to deny the Sky Blues on the stroke of half-time.
After the break, Wilson looked like she was on course to notch a third for Pompey when she struck the ball sweetly just outside the box but Worrall moved swiftly to tip her effort over.
Just after the hour mark, Blakely kept Pompey’s lead in tact when she rose above everyone to pluck a threatening shot out of the air.
In the dying minutes, Jemma Tewkesbury turned Cox’s cross into the side-netting – it was the last real opportunity of the game.
Pompey will now entertain Barnet in quarter-finals of the Premier League Cup on Sunday, March 24. The winners will face either Blackburn Rovers or Aston Villa in the semi-finals.
